Macchiato is a popular coffee drink, especially among young people. So what makes macchiato so special and why is it so popular? Let’s explore the origins and characteristics of this type of coffee!

What is Macchiato?

Origin of Macchiato

Macchiato originates from Italy. In Italian, the word means “stained” or “spotted” — a reference to the distinctive appearance of a freshly prepared cup of Macchiato, where a small brown streak is dotted on top of the milk foam as a decorative touch.

Some historical accounts also suggest that “Macchiato” was coined as a way to distinguish this drink from Cappuccino and Latte.

What is Macchiato?

Macchiato is a beverage crafted from two primary ingredients: Espresso coffee and pasteurized milk. That is why in Vietnam it is commonly referred to as Cà phê Macchiato (Macchiato Coffee).

This drink is beloved worldwide for its bold flavor, its gently spreading aroma, and its refined elegance. In particular, each cup draws people in with its beautifully decorated layer of white milk foam.

Types of Macchiato coffee

Among the Macchiato varieties originating from Italy, consumers hold two types in the highest regard: Espresso Macchiato and Latte Macchiato — and these are also the two most widely available.

What makes each of these two Macchiato coffees uniquely special? Although they are made from the same ingredients, the two are completely opposite in their brewing ratios. Each drink carries its own appeal, suited to the individual preferences of each drinker.

Espresso Macchiato

Espresso Macchiato is brewed from Espresso and fresh milk; however, the fresh milk accounts for only a small proportion, with coffee remaining the dominant ingredient. The fresh milk is steamed and appears only as a thin layer on the surface, accompanied by a small amount of milk foam.

As a result, when drinking Espresso Macchiato, you will mostly taste the bold bitterness of the coffee, along with a slight creaminess from the fresh milk.

Latte Macchiato

Latte Macchiato is distinguished by its primary composition of fresh milk with a thick, velvety milk foam, while coffee makes up only a very small fraction. Therefore, when enjoying a Latte Macchiato, the drinker perceives mainly the rich, milky fragrance with just a hint of coffee flavor. It is safe to say that those who prefer sweeter beverages will favor Latte Macchiato over Espresso Macchiato.

Beyond these two popular varieties, Macchiato comes in many other versions, such as Caramel Macchiato, Hazelnut Macchiato, and more.

Are you enjoying your Macchiato the right way?

Coffee-drinking culture varies from region to region around the world, and among all of them, Italy’s is the most elaborate. Beyond the diverse brewing methods, each cup of Italian coffee also calls for a specific way of savoring it in order to enjoy the drink at its fullest.

For example, when drinking a Cappuccino, the drinker should choose the angle of the cup that least disturbs the decorative art on the surface, so they can sip slowly without ruining the design. At the same time, it is recommended to cup both palms around the outside of the cup to retain warmth for longer while drinking.

So what is the correct way to enjoy a cup of Macchiato? Because Macchiato is crafted in distinct layers when prepared, drinkers are advised not to use a straw. A straw can only draw from a single layer and fails to create a harmonious blend of flavors.

Instead, drinking directly from the cup allows you to fully experience the perfect union of all layers at once — a touch of coffee’s aroma and bitterness, a hint of the clean sweetness of fresh milk, and a little richness from the milk foam.

Brewing Method

First, warm the fresh milk — pour a portion into the cup, and use a frother to whip the remaining portion into milk foam. Note: warm the cup before adding milk so the drink stays hot longer. At the same time, use approximately 8 grams of ground coffee to brew around 30 ml of Espresso, then pour it in as the next layer.

Finally, spoon the freshly whipped milk foam on top of the surface. You can also create latte art similar to that on a Latte, but keep in mind that if you are making a Caramel Macchiato, it is best served with a small cookie on the side.
